English as an International Language

About one hundred years ago many educated people learned and spoke French when they met people from other countries. Today most people speak English when they meet foreigners. It has become the new international language.

What is Common European Framework of Reference?


The Common European Framework of Reference gives you a detailed description of learner level by skill, in language-neutral format. The CEFR has been very significant in language learning and teaching because its impact goes beyond merely describing learner levels. It has underpinned a particular approach to language learning as the one most commonly recommended or expected in language teaching nowadays. This approach is based on the notion of communicative proficiency - the increasing ability to communicate and operate effectively in the target language.

The descriptions of levels are skill-based and take the format of Can Do statements. These descriptions of ability focus on communicative purpose and make for a very practical approach, which looks at what people can do - rather than on specific linguistic knowledge.

English Language Training Programmes

Our English Language Training programmes are delivered in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR) and cover following levels A1, A2, B1, B2 & C1 (from Beginner to Upper-Intermediate).

General English

Designed for people wanting to improve their English skills in all areas and increase their confidence using English in everyday situations.


Business  English

The course focuses on common language interaction in business, such as telephoning, writing business letters, meetings, and giving presentations.  There is a strong focus on spoken skills and grammar, as well as an emphasis on formal writing and business-related vocabulary.

Technical English

This course was designed for oil and gas professionals, who already have a good standard of English.  The subjects covered can be tailored to the Client's needs and will include industry specific vocabulary on products and processes, health and safety as well as helping with business communication skills such as giving presentations, report writing and telephone skills.


English for Specific Purposes

English for Finance, HR, Procurement etc. - normally this would be a short-term course for a target audience.

Three dimensions of CEFR

The CEFR has three principal dimensions: language activities, the domains in which the language activities occur, and the competences on which we draw when we engage in them.

Language activities

The CEFR distinguishes between four kinds of language activities:

  • reception (listening and reading),
  • production (spoken and written),
  • interaction (spoken and written),
  • and mediation (translating and interpreting).


General and particular communicative competences are developed by producing or receiving texts in various contexts under various conditions and constraints. These contexts correspond to various sectors of social life that the CEFR calls domains. Four broad domains are distinguished: educational, occupational, public, and personal.


A language user can develop various degrees of competence in each of these domains and to help describe them the CEFR has provided a set of six Common Reference Levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2).


In-house ELT programmeIn-house ELT programme

The in-house ELT programme that we offer will be highly efficient, cost effective, intensive and fast, delivered at our Client’s premises by qualified and  experienced ELT instructors.



The ELT programme is provided by experienced and certified language instructors with previous experience teaching English in energy sector.

All instructors will be qualified English language teachers or will have CELTA and not less than 5 years of experience teaching English for adults.

Class size

Group sizes may vary between 6 and 12 students.

Students will be normally grouped with other employees who are of similar proficiency. It has been observed when people work in groups they learn better.


Course materials

TECEDU uses MACMILLAN Education series for business and general English. All courses were developed in accordance with CEFR.

Students will be provided with all necessary stationary such as pens, pencils, notebooks, course books and audio aids required for the course.


CELTA was developed to be suitable both for those interested in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and for Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL).

Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages is teacher training qualification for teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL and EFL). It is provided by Cambridge English Language Assessment.


How long it takes?


The CEFR helps us understand not only the different levels of language proficiency but also how learners progress through the levels.

 The Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) estimates that learners typically take the following guided learning hours to progress between levels. “Guided learning hours” here means time in lessons as well as tasks set by the trainer to do:

  • A1 - Approximately 90-100 hours of guided learning hrs;
  • A2 - Approximately 180-200 hours of guided learning hrs;
  • B1 - Approximately 350-400 hours of guided learning hrs;
  • B2 - Approximately 500-600 hours of guided learning hrs;
  • C1 - Approximately 700-800 hours of guided learning hrs;
  • C2 - Approximately 1000-1200 hours of guided learning hrs.

You will notice that it takes longer to progress a level as learners move up to scale and of course learners vary in how long they take depending on many factors. This means that many learners will follow more than one course to progress from one level to the next.
